Chappies open for Two Oceans!
Cape Town - Participants in the Two Oceans Marathon will be allowed to use the closed Chapman's Peak drive, the Western Cape premier's office said on Sunday.
"We will allow the race to go ahead on this scenic route only if we are totally satisfied that the safety of runners on the day of the race will not be compromised," said premier Lynne Brown in a statement.
However, participants will use the road at their own risk and be required to indemnify the provincial government and Entilini Concession, the company that operates the road, against potential injuries.
Chapman's Peak drive has been closed since June of last year when the road was damaged by several rock falls. It has been undergoing repairs ever since.
The Two Ocean's Marathon will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. Last year the race drew 6 564 participants from around the world. This year's marathon will be held on April 11.

Defar sets world women's indoor record
Ethiopian Meseret Defar broke the women's world indoor 5 000 metres record on Wednesday when she clocked 14 minutes 24.37 seconds at the DN Galan meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. Defar, undefeated indoors in six years, broke compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba's previous mark of 14:27.42 set in Boston two years ago.
She finished the race with a last lap of 30.3 seconds to mark an auspicious return to Stockholm. Defar narrowly failed to break Dibaba's outdoor 5 000 mark in her last appearance in the Swedish capital.
It was her first indoor 5 000 race since 2004 when she won the Olympic title.
Australia's Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker ended his indoor campaign with his fifth victory in as many competitions. Hooker cleared 5.86 metres before failing at six metres.
