Let there be light : The cANCer of corruption is the ANC

The Democratic Alliance is the party to stop the ANC’s bid to gain a two-thirds majority, its leader Hellen Zille said on Tuesday.

”The more power the ANC gets, the more power it abuses, the more power it abuses, the more corrupt it becomes …” Zille said at the University of Pretoria during her election campaign

She said the ANC must be kept below a two-thirds majority in the April 22 election.

”This time we can do it, because the ANC has split. Two-thirds is too much, it allows the ANC to change the Constitution unilaterally. And you can be sure that the ANC will change the Constitution to get Jacob Zuma off the hook.”

She said the ANC president would walk away from his corruption trial a free man, if the ANC achieved a majority of two-thirds.

”The ANC wants total power so that there will be no limitations on its abuse of power, and its corruption … the ruling party has systematically abused its two-thirds majority in Parliament to shield Zuma and to further his narrow interests and those of his cabal.

She said the ANC had abused its majority to kill off the Scorpions, because the unit had investigated Zuma and other members of his ”closed, crony circle”.

”The ANC abused its majority to ratify the dismissal of Advocate Vusi Pikoli, the former National Director of Public Prosecutions, because it knew it couldn’t persuade Pikoli to drop the charges against Zuma.”

She said the ruling party endorsed Pikoli’s removal from office, despite the recommendations of the Ginwala Commission. In doing so, the ANC showed its contempt for the people, its contempt for Parliament, and its contempt for the Constitution.

She said disbanding the Scorpions was the first step ”political solution” for Zuma. Firing Pikoli was the second step. And the next step entailed the ANC abusing its majority to pass legislation and or change the Constitution to grant Zuma — in his capacity as sitting president — immunity from prosecution.

She said only the DA was big enough to take on the ANC.

”Only the DA is big enough to stop Jacob Zuma and the ANC abusing their power … the election is not just about keeping the ANC below a two-thirds majority.

”The election is an important milestone in a longer process, which involves the DA consolidating its status as a party of government at local, provincial and national level, and creating a new majority.

”After this election, we will go on to face the 2011 local government elections, where we will win cities and towns across South Africa. In the final phase of this process, the DA will form the core of national.” – Sapa

An ANC campaign rally in Ga-Rankuwa, Tshwane, temporarily descended into chaos on Friday when angry residents demanded their grievances be addressed.

“You. Put your placards down. I have seen them,” said party president Cyril Ramaphosa, pointing his finger at the group of placard-carrying residents.

At around midday, shortly after a door-to-door campaign at an informal settlement, Ramaphosa made his way to a small sports ground nearby. When he arrived, some locals cheered for him while others expressed their rage at the manner in which the candidate councillors’ process had been handled.

At the mini-rally, Ramaphosa greeted the crowd and began his campaign speech. However, not long after he started speaking, he was interrupted by screaming residents who hurled insults at the local councillor.

With a smile on his face, Ramaphosa said sternly: “Keep quiet. You are drunk.”

He then jokingly added: “When it is this hot and you drink alcohol, it is fermenting inside you and drives you crazy.”

A local ANC member, Lebohang Tifo, told TimesLIVE: “The problem is they have brought the president and we were expecting the president is going to attend to our problems.

“The processes at ward 31 and ward 32 were nullified because the guidelines were not followed, especially in ward 31. We are not going to accept the ward councillors at ward 31 and 32.”

Resident Lesego Gutvao said residents had been “going back and forth” trying to deal with complaints against their local government representatives.

“We started by closing the IEC [Electoral Commission voting station] because our grievances were not met. Then we went to close the legislature at Sisulu House and Luthuli House, hoping they will attend to them. Even today, we are still waiting.”

He said the community was “tired of the killings of comrades in ward 32”.

He said one ANC member was shot 22 times at his home, and Godfrey Gauwe was also murdered.

“Let us go out in our numbers on November 1. We are going back to Luthuli House to tell them you are going to vote for the ANC.”Sello Mello complained of corruption in the area.

“We need councillors who listen to the ANC and if they do not, we will refer them to the rules of the ANC,” he said.

Eventually the crowd was brought under control and Ramaphosa continued with his campaign message.

Suffering & freedom from oppression : KZN ANC brands DA as a 'racist organisation' over Phoenix election posters

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has come out strongly against the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s election posters, describing them as a desperate move from a party willing to do anything, including dividing society, so that it could thrive.

DURBAN - The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has labeled the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s new election posters in Phoenix as shameful, fascist and disgusting.

The posters, which were put up on Tuesday, read: “The ANC calls you racists, the DA calls you heroes.”

The DA said that the posters were to honour those who stood up to protect their properties during the July unrest.

But the posters have been largely criticised for fueling racial tension.

Thirty-six people were killed in the area during the looting in July, with a number of residents standing trial for murder.

As expected, the ANC in KZN has come out strongly against the DA's election posters, describing them as a desperate move from a party willing to do anything, including dividing society, so that it could thrive.

“This is a political hypocrisy of the highest order of the party which claims to be a nonracial organisation,” said the ANC’s Nhlakanipho Ntombela.

Ntombela has called on Indian communities in the province to work with the ANC. He insisted that his party would never shy away from calling for those responsible for the killings in Phoenix to be jailed.

“We call on the Indian community, in particular in Phoenix and in Chatsworth, and all the surrounding areas to see for themselves that the DA is clearly a racist organisation,” he added.

As the two parties squabble over the DA posters, this tragedy will take centre stage on Wednesday as the case of 19-year-old Mondli Majola, who was killed in Phoenix, returns to court.

Julius Malema has threatened to go after Indians in Phoenix who were killing black

South Africans if police doesn't find them sooner.

The Phoenix massacre saw several black South Africans being killed in a stand off

that happened between them and the Indians in Phoenix in Kwa-Zulu Natal province.

"I just want to address one point of Phoenix where the Indians were killing our

people there.

The police will have to find those people because we may be left with no option but

to go find them ourselves. So, the sooner they do that, the better," said Malema.

Malema stated that what the Indians did in Phoenix is unforgettable and warned the

police to rather look for those Indian "thugs" than going door-to-door looking for

goods which they are going to destroy.

"What those Indians did there in Phoenix is unforgettable, we will never forgive them

for what they did to our people.

And those are Indian criminals, they must be called exactly that. We are not going

to make any apology about that," he said.

Julius Malema also send his condolences to families who lost their relatives during

the Phoenix massacre.

"We want to send our condolences to our people in KZN, especially those who were

killed by Indian thugs.

We are sending our condolences and we are saying to them, they will not die in

vain–we will make sure that they get justice," he said.
