So the world’s elite athletes are all in Beiljing for the Summer Olympics starting this Friday. Or should that be Beijing. We’re a bit confused here, and so are all the South African Olympic athletes, because the city is spelt wrong on their clothing.
That’s the least of their worries. By all reports the clothing doesn’t fit right, is made of a heavy tracksuit-like material and has been done on the cheap. Quite simply, it’s appalling.
It seems that no one from SASCOC, the crowd in charge of our Olympic team, is able to comment about the shoddy gear, but it is clear the poorly made clothing, lacklustre fitting and bad quality is going to have a major effect on the team’s performance.
While the world’s elite athletes will be dressed in the best and latest running gear available, the South African team will be dressed like primary school cross country runners with parents on a budget. How on earth SASCOC could not find a supplier willing to dress the nations best is beyond me.
The psychological effect of this is obvious. Imagine trying to perform when even your own country can’t be bothered to dress you properly. Every one of those athletes has trained their hearts out to represent their country and yet they will stand at their start lines looking like amateurs and chumps.
SASCOC, you have failed South Africa. You have failed to understand the significance of having pride in your country, and everyone responsible for this dire level of ineptitude should hang their heads in shame. Our hope is that our brave athletes will be able to rise above the inadequacies of the administrators.
