Rocklands 2008 XC well supported & organised!

Monday 28/07/2008

What started out with a heavy downpour Sunday morning turned into a very nice and successful day. Everybody pitched in with their resources, money or their labour.

Recieved a lot of postive feedback! Thanks Hussy for the pics!

Paul : "And in my mind also on the most difficult route thus far this season ... In hindsight, I had a absolute jol. I really enjoyed the cross country today and well done to Mitchells Plain Titans. You can be proud of your cross country event today. Tough no doubt, but enjoyable"

Hussy : "one of my favourite courses so far i think, it had a bit of everything, those monster sand dunes were a killer!"

Ratso : "I would ordinarily not believe that, but one of the advantages of being really pedestrian is that in the middle of my race I got to spectate the leaders of the Senior Mens race going up that first dune and even they were going at a walking pace"

Peekay : "Best of the day: Good organising, good company, challenging route"

Pooper : "None-the-less, well done MP Titans, great route, great run - lots of fun! Glad I made the effort"

M : "Phew, once again another HECTIC cross country... they seem to get more and more tough... "

Missy : "all in all, an excellent course well done mp titans"

Only incidents reported at our info/results desk was lost keys and clothing.

Spotted a few of the forumites : Hussy, Missy, Paul, Ratso, Pooper, M & Chris G. Heard Hans, Peekay, The Umpire, Helen & Wilby was there but didn't see them.

The Plainsman was there to take photo's of the under 13's!

The sun is out! Hoping for a 4:45 finish pending no 30km runs and a 2:12 Freedom run finish.

Sat : PPC 42 - info

Take the first Malmesbury turnoff. It is an off-ramp to the left. At the stop street, turn left and then you go under the N7. Keep going,go over the big 4-way robot and up quite a steep, short hill. At the stop street, take a right and you stay on that road until you get the Ceres/Hermon turnoff to the left. Take the left - you'll see a sign on the pole directing you to the race. From there you can just follow. You go up and over the mountain, and turn first left on the other side. That road leads to Riebeeck West and the PPC factory. You actually drive right through the village and out the other side. But there will be lots of cars going there, you can't really go wrong. Just get the early because there is usually a back-up of traffic.

Washie athlete attacked!

Monday 21/07/2008

LAST year’s Washie 100 women’s winner Susan Hurter was attacked near the 160 kilometre road race’s halfway mark on Saturday night – but bravely pushed on to finish in eleventh position, Peter Martin reports.

At about 2am on Saturday, nine hours into the race - which starts in Port Alfred - and nearing the halfway stage, Hurter of AS Eagles Pretoria was suddenly accosted by an unknown man and dragged off the road by her hair. The attacker demanded that Hurter switch off the light all the runners are forced to wear at night-time to protect them from on-coming traffic, but she refused and fought back, screaming loudly.

Alec Wainwright, a lawyer from Johannesburg, who was acting as a second for his son, Stuart, who at the time was running about 300 metres behind Hurter, heard her screams and drove as fast as he could towards the scene. Upon his and Stuart’s approach, the unknown attacker released Hurter and disappeared into the thick bushes along side the road. The athlete was badly traumatised by the attack and her seconds suggested that she retire from the race. However, the brave runner, after taking about 50 minutes to recover from her ordeal, decided to push on and she finished the race in 11th position overall in 21 hours, 52 mins and 11 seconds.

Went to the Rocklands Sports Complex last night to confirm directions and landmarks for friends who'll be attending this Sunday's crosscountry hosted by my club.

Reading these comments I wondered why our club chose Rocklands over Stephen Reagan Sports Complex in Westridge.

1. Stephen Reagan has no parking inside only outside around perimeter in main road and some may be tempted to park in front of peoples driveways across the road. Rocklands has enclosed parking inside and on grass around soccer fields.

2. Stephen Reagan is prettier and cleaner but not condusive for a crosscountry event.

3. Everybody knows the landmarks for the Westgate Mall & the Fire station but easy references can also be made to the Stragglers 15km start and then pointed further down Spine Road to get there.

DWARP uploaded some nice pictures of their run in Knysna.

Overendulged!

Monday 07/07/2008

Read the following this morning in the Imaginary Times ... Some runners!

7 July, Bellville, Cape Town Early Saturday morning, 5 July, security at Tygervalley Centre in Bellville was baffled when two green and yellow clad 'ghosts' were reported, apparently appearing at regular intervals along the perimeter of the undercover carpark. Further investigation revealed the presence of two runners apparently suffering from withdrawal symptoms and feeling 'desparate for some km on the legs'.

Thanks NT, Slow and Bennie!
