Big Walk winners set blistering pace

Sweat, thirst and blisters aside, organisers of yesterday’s Discovery Cape Times Big Walk are reporting an “awesome” day for the 105-year-old annual trek.

Mlambo walks away with Grand Prix

Poppy Mlambo (Mr Price CG) became R50 000 richer on Friday, after receiving the first prize for winning the 2008 SPAR Women's 10km Challenge Grand Prix.

Mlambo, who ran in all five Grand Prix races, finished with 88 points --eight ahead of her nearest rival, Ezbé Strydom of North West University. Strydom received a cheque for R30 000 and third placed Gloria Baeba (Transnet) received R15 000.

International and national commitments meant that last year's Grand Prix winner, René Kalmer (Mr Price CG), was only able to take part in two races. She nevertheless finished in eighth place, winning R5 000.

"My first goal will be the South African marathon championships in Durban in February, and I will also run in the Soweto Marathon next year. I live in Soweto, so I want to support the race."

The Grand Prix was introduced in 2007 and has proved very popular with athletes around the country. Points are earned from each of the five races run in Port Elizabeth, Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Radcliffe wins third New York marathon!

Paul Radcliffe successfully defended her New York City marathon crown in emphatic fashion on Sunday by posting a decisive, front-running victory. The Briton completed the 26.2-mile (42.2-km) course through the city's five boroughs in two hours 23 minutes 56 seconds, according to unofficial results. A distant second was 40-year-old Russian Ludmila Petrova, the 2000 champion, nearly two minutes back in 2:25:43. Third was American Kara Goucher, who posted a time of 2:25:53.

The victory was Radcliffe's third in New York following wins in 2004 and 2007, giving her the most women's titles in this race other than Grete Waitz of Norway, a nine-times winner. Radcliffe's triumph was sweet, coming after 23rd place in the Beijing Olympic marathon, where her training was hampered by injury.

Runner dies after finishing NYC marathon

Two runners died after completing the New York City Marathon, one shortly after crossing the finish line and the other several hours later.

Carlos Jose Gomes, a 58-year-old Brazilian, had just completed the race Sunday when he complained about feeling ill, police said.

He was taken by ambulance to a Manhattan hospital, where he died.

The cause was a heart attack, the medical examiner's office said Monday. The identity and cause of death of the other runner were not disclosed.

At least two other competitors became ill during therun and had to be hospitalized. More than 38,000 runners took part.

"There's nothing harder for us than when one of our participants doesn't make it home at the end of the day," said Mary Wittenberg, president of New York Road Runners, the race organizer. "We express our deepest condolences to the athletes' families."

The previous fatality at the race was in 1994, she said

The bottom line is that after nearly nine years here at Runner’s World, I had become so jaded and tired that the mere thought of going to work was enough to make me nauseous. There are many reasons for this, which I’m not going to go into now, but it got to the stage where my health was being affected, in terms of losing sleep and my appetite, which meant I had flu all the time (and couldn’t run). I simply decided I couldn’t go on like this and had to do something about it. Yes, it was sudden decision to go, and yes, I’m sitting here now having massive doubts and second thoughts and questioning my sanity, but I still feel that it is the right thing to do – for me. I would just have gotten worse if I didn’t move now.

We wish you well on your new endeveours!

Newcomer burns up the track

Kenyan newcomer Alicent Rutto of Gauteng Striders, who has been in South Africa for just three weeks, breezed home in 34 minutes 58 seconds in the Spar Women's 10km Challenge at Old Parktonians in Randburg on Sunday morning.

Rene Kalmer (Mr Price Gauteng Central) was second in 35:43, with Irvette van Blerk (Nedbank CG) hot on her heels in 35:50.

"Conditions were perfect," enthused Rutto's manager, Tshepo Khoza.

"Alicent found the route a little tough because of the hill, but she had a very good run. She took the lead at the 5km mark and just stayed there."

"I've never raced against her before," said runner-up Kalmer.

"She tucked herself behind me at about three kilometres, and then went into the lead at five, and I just couldn't get ahead of her.

"If I had known more about her, I would have planned my race differently. We'll be running against each other in the Soweto 10kms, and I will definitely adopt a different game plan."

Determination wins Grand Prix for Xiniwe

Twenty-one year Celtic Harriers runner Zintle Xiniwe is R50 000 richer after winning the annual Spar Grand Prix Challenge by finishing fourth in the Johannesburg leg of the Women's 10km Challenge at Old Parktonians on Sunday.

Xiniwe, who competed in four of the five races making up the Grand Prix, finished at the top of the leaderboard with 93 points. Poppy Mlambo (Mr Price CG), who came sixth in Sunday's race, finished in second place on the leaderboard, with 87 points from five races, and took home R30 000.

Last year's Grand Prix winner, Rene Kalmer (Mr Price CG), who came second in the Challenge race on Sunday, finished in eighth position, with 65 points.
